High Speed-Weight in Motion (HS-WIM) camera system to detect overweight lorries ready in Q3 2025 – Loke

Overweight lorries are hazardous to other motorists, a ticking time bomb. The authorities’ current way of monitoring them is manual and difficult – stop the suspected lorry and bring it to the scales. However, an automated camera-based system will be ready by Q3 2025, transport minister Anthony Loke said.

The system, called High Speed – Weight in Motion (HS-WIM) is a new approach to monitor the movement of heavy vehicles that exceed their payload.

“HS-WIM uses camera technology. When a heavy vehicle passes the area, with sensors, we will know if the vehicle is overweight or not, and the cameras will record the vehicle. So we will know what time the vehicle passes that area, how heavy it was, and if it’s overweight, we can issue a saman to the owner,” Loke told the media in Putrajaya yesterday, reported by Astro Awani.

The Seremban MP added that the transport ministry has identified 10 locations across the country to install the HS-WIM system. The plan is to conduct enforcement at hotspots, areas with high accident rates and high traffic areas.

A total of 825 lorries were involved in fatal crashes, which resulted in 5,364 deaths in the first 10 months of the 2024. Last month, a three-vehicle accident on the PLUS in Melaka caused by a tyre that fell off a trailer claimed seven lives.
