BMW iX – first EV to get Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the most advanced in a car!

BMW has announced that the iX SUV will be getting the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, making it the first fully electric vehicle to get the British audio company’s top-end offering.

The Diamond Surround Sound System, recently unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2021 show in Munich, is said to be the most advanced sound quality found in a car. B&W went as far as to claim that the audio experience is akin to being physically present with the artist in the studio, a concept it refers to as “True Sound.”

As implied in the name, the system comprises Diamond Dome tweeters, which is the same technology found in its 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers, the kind of monitor loudspeaker Abbey Road Studios prefer. The tweeters create exceptionally accurate audio with low distortion thanks to Nautilus swirls tech. This is made up of spiralling channels behind the tweeter domes that dissipate reflected sound waves emanating from the rear of the drive unit, limiting distortion.

In keeping with the minimalist interior of the iX, the tweeters are covered with brushed stainless-steel panels, replete with laser-etched logos and a discreet lighting effect. The door speakers, on the other hand, are discretely hidden behind acoustically optimised fabric.

There’s a total of two Diamond Dome tweeters, three Aluminium Dome tweeters, and five Aramid Fibre midrange speakers mounted as high as possible within the cabin. A further eight speakers are integrated into the front and rear head restraints, which can be individually adjusted to create a truly personalised audio experience for each passenger.

Also, for the first time, four bass speakers are joined by 4D Shakers that are strategically positioned in the cabin, producing a rich bassy profile even at low volumes. There will be four different audio profiles to choose from, each providing a sound that is “superbly detailed and free from colouration.”
