2022 Mazda CX-5 facelift leaked in China – Dec debut?

The second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been around since 2016, and based on leaked images posted to China’s Autospy, it looks like the SUV will receive a facelift in 2021 for the 2022 model year. While there are no official details for now, a separate report by Creative Trend suggests the refreshed SUV will be launched in Japan this December.

As far as styling revisions go, the CX-5 gets a reprofiled front grille with an insert design that is reminiscent of what you’ll find on the Mazda 3 Sedan. There’s still a chrome frame for the bottom half of the grille, although it is now thicker on the sides and no longer cuts as much into the headlamps as the current model.

On that mention, the dual-beam headlamps are also new and feature L-shaped graphics within them, while the lower apron has been simplified, with the tiny fog lamps and black strip seemingly omitted.

The rear remains largely familiar, save for the redesigned two-piece taillights that appear slightly slimmer than before. Further downwards, the reflectors have been made smaller and are positioned higher up above the exhaust pipes, which are joined by a tweaked panel in black. Smaller details include the model script that now uses the company’s latest typeface, as seen on the CX-30.

There are no interior shots yet, but don’t expect significant changes apart from maybe new seats, trim and upholstery, given the CX-5 got a larger infotainment screen as part of a 2021 model year update last August.

With the current CX-5 set to receive a facelift, this will likely mean we won’t see a next-generation model as reported previously. The third-generation CX-5 will be a radical departure from the current, front-wheel drive formula, as it is said to switch to a rear-wheel drive platform instead. If that isn’t enough, there’s even talk about inline-six engines being used, along with an expected eight-speed automatic transmission.
