The Volvo ES90 is set to debut March 5, though an image of the Swedish carmaker’s upcoming battery-electric sedan has been leaked by what is claimed to be a Dutch source, according to Swedish website alltomelbil.
Meanwhile, Volvo themselves had previously released a series of teaser images for the ES90 as early as last September, while some key specifications have been released last week.
The ES90 will be the first Volvo to employ an 800-volt electrical architecture, whereas the EX90 uses a 400-volt system. As both the ES90 and EX90 are built on the SPA2 platform, rumours suggest the EX90 SUV could get upgraded to the 800-volt system in the future.
The use of 800-volt technology enables the ES90 to support ultra-fast DC charging, and Volvo claims that the sedan will be able to regain 300 km of battery range in just 10 minutes when connected to a DC charger capable of delivering 350 kW. Through new battery management software and hardware, the ES90 is claimed to be capable of up to 700 km of range on the WLTP testing standard.
Volvo also claims the use of lighter components, including the drive motors, to reduce the ES90’s overall weight, which is said to contribute to its efficiency, range and acceleration. New software is claimed to reduce its 10-80% charge time by as much as 30%, to just 20 minutes.
The materials used in the ES90 also reflect Volvo’s commitment to sustainability; 29% of the aluminium and 18% of the steel used in the ES90 is recycled, and the electric sedan also contains 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials, while FSC-certified wood is used for the interior wood panels.
