KLIA Aerotrain delayed, Jan 31 start date not possible

The aerotrain service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has been delayed from its previously expected operational date of January 31, 2025, The Star has reported.

There is no definite operational date given by the contractor responsible for the aerotrain, said transport minister Anthony Loke. “They (contractors) have yet to give a firm date, despite giving the impression previously that it could be done by January 31,” Loke said.

While the ministry of transport supports the privatisation of Malaysia Airport Holdings (MAHB), more can be done to improve airports in the country, the transport minister said.

“On record, we were not happy with MAHB previously, a lot of decisions were delayed, and the aerotrain is a good example. I have to answer to the public. But, the decision on the aerotrain was not by me or the Transport Ministry. The decision is made by MAHB and they should be accountable as well. That is why, this privatisation exercise is something we support,” Loke said.

On the same matter, New Straits Times cited Loke as saying that the aerotrain was undergoing dynamic testing, with additional phases of full system testing and system integration required before the handover to relevant authorities for final approval.

The January 31 start date for the Automated People Mover System, otherwise known as the aerotrain, was reported in September 2024, as train sets which had arrived at the time were said to be entering the installation phase, followed by the inspection phase which was said to take around four months.

The new aerotrain set consists of three cars and is standing room only, as it serves to connect the main terminal with the satellite terminal. The assembly plant for the aerotrain set is in Wuhu, China, and is a joint effort beteween Alstom and the China Railway Construction Corporation (CCRC).
