Race on Sunday, sell on Monday, they say. This is the best example of it, the new Hyundai Elantra N TCR Edition, which looks a like a road version of Hyundai’s entry in the Touring Car Racing (TCR) World Tour for production-based vehicles.
The South Korean company says that the Elantra N TCR Edition was ‘designed to boost N-thusiasm for those who love driving’ and represents the wealth of experience it has gained since joining the TCR World Tour in 2017.
The hot sedan seen here wears a lightweight carbon swan neck spoiler, which is adjustable to provide optimal downforce settings. It also sits on rigid and lightweight 19-inch N TCR forged wheels and is equipped with N Performance four-piston brakes as standard.
Special interior and exterior parts include TCR Edition decals (in South Korea only), a race-inspired Alcantara steering wheel with a Performance Blue top marker, Performance Blue seat belts and exclusive TCR Edition badging. These spice up the rather tame cockpit of the standard car, which was unveiled in 2021.
“Hyundai Motor has incorporated the experience and expertise accumulated in motorsports into Elantra N TCR Edition. We will continue to enhance the DNA of Hyundai N, so that N-thusiasts can experience the thrill of motorsports in their daily lives,” said Joon Park, VP of the N Brand Management Group.
No extra power, so under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbo-four with 280 PS and 392 Nm of torque from 2,100 to 4,700 rpm. Max power can reach 290 PS for 20 seconds with the sedan’s N Grin Shift (NGS) overboost function, which Hyundai says has an interval pause time of 40 seconds so drivers can engage the function at every lap.
Power is sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electronic limited-slip differential, which allows the Elantra N to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission option is available for those who like to DIY.
Other novel N stuff with their own acronyms include the N Sound Equaliser (NSE) that plays exhaust notes through the cabin speakers, and the Linear Variable Exhaust Valve System (LVE) and Upshift Bang Sound (UBS) to help to ensure you hear the actual exhaust sound better.
Hyundai plans to launch Elantra N TCR Edition in South Korea next month (where it’s known as the Avante) before expanding availability to global markets in 2025. What do you think of the Elantra N’s design and performance? Browse the stock car below.
