Deepal S05

According to Maybank Investment Bank, Bermaz Auto (BAuto) will add Deepal to its portfolio of car brands which currently includes Mazda, Kia and Xpeng. Deepal is owned by Changan Automobile that also has Changan Auto and Avatr under its wing.

Based on a report by the investment bank, the first Deepal models are expected to be launched in Malaysia in mid-2025, likely fully imported (CBU) from Thailand, which has a production plant in Rayong that will begin operating in March next year.

Two models were named as potential arrivals, including the S05 that went on sale in China in October this year. The S05 is bigger than the BYD Atto 3 we have here, measuring in at 4,620 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, 1,600 mm tall and with a wheelbase that spans 2,880 mm.

In China, the pure electric version of the S05 comes in four variants priced between 119,900 and 145,900 yuan (about RM74k and RM90k). All of them feature the same powertrain that sees a 56.12-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery providing up to 510 km of range following the country’s extremely generous CLTC standard.

The battery powers a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 238 PS (235 hp or 175 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. It also supports DC fast charging, with a 30-80% state of charge (SoC) achieved in 15 minutes.

The S05 is also offered as a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) that uses a smaller, 27.28-kWh LFP battery (30-80% SoC in 20 minutes) powering a lesser rear electric motor with 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 320 Nm for a century sprint time of 7.9 seconds. The range extender comes in the form of a 1.5 litre engine providing 98 PS (97 hp or 72 kW).

On electric power alone, the S05 REEV’s range is 200 km following the CLTC, or 155 km is based on the WLTC standard. The CLTC comprehensive operating range with both the battery and range extender in use, is up to 1,234 km.

Another model slated for Malaysia is the S07, which is a facelifted and renamed version of the S7. Launched in China in July, this electric vehicle (EV) is also available as a range-extended model, of which there are four variants priced between 149,900 and 176,900 yuan (RM92k and RM109k). The S07 is meant to compete against the Tesla Model Y in terms of size and measures in at 4,750 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,625 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

Much like the S05, the S07 REEV has a 1.5 litre engine as a range extender and is rear-wheel drive. Differences include the energy capacity of the LFP battery as well as the output of the electric motor. The base option with an 18.99-kWh unit has outputs of 238 PS (235 hp or 175 kW) and 320 Nm, and has an EV-only range of 125 km (CLTC) or 95 km (WLTC) – the combined hybrid range is 1,045 km (CLTC).

The next step up gets a 31.73-kWh battery and keeps the same output figures as the base variant, but has more EV-only range at 215 km (CLTC) or 165 km (WLTC) – the combined hybrid range is 1,130 km (CLTC).

The top variant has a 39.05-kWh battery for even more EV-only range of 285 km (CLTC) or 210 km (WLTC) – combined hybrid range is 1,200 km (CLTC) – along with more power at 258 PS (255 hp or 190 kW) and 320 Nm. The 0-100 km/h times are between 7.6 and 7.8 seconds, with all variants capable of getting from a 30-80% SoC in 15 minutes.

As for the pure electric version of the S07, the two available variants in China both get a 68.82-kWh LFP battery for 520 km of range (CLTC) and will get from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds thanks to a rear electric motor rated at 258 PS (255 hp or 190 kW) and 320 Nm.

Thailand has already welcomed the S07, with two EV-only variants offered. The regular S07 priced at 1.399 million baht (RM180k) has a 66.8-kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for 485 km of range (NEDC), along with a rear electric motor rated at 258 PS (255 hp or 190 kW) and 320 Nm. It is joined by the S07 L at 1.499 million baht (RM193k) and with a 79.97-kWh NMC battery for 560 km of range (NEDC), plus an electric motor making 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 320 Nm.
