BYD has announced that on September 2, 2024, it celebrated the production of its nine millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), a Yangwang U9.

The achievement comes just over two months after the company’s eight millionth NEV, a BYD Dolphin, rolled off the line at its Thailand plant in early July this year. At the current rate of production, BYD is projected to see its ten or even 11 millionth NEV by the end of this year.

The U9 is the second electric vehicle (EV) from Yangwang, which is a sub-brand under BYD. It is part of a line-up that includes the U8 off-road SUV, and later this year, the U7 sedan that was unveiled at this year’s Beijing Auto Show held in April.

Priced at 1.68 million yuan (about RM992k), the U9 is built on the e4 platform with a carbon-fibre monocoque and DiSus-X active body control suspension. The powertrain features four electric motors – one for each wheel – that are rated at 326 PS (322 hp or 240 kW) for a total system output of 1,306 PS (1,287 hp or 960 kW) and 1,680 Nm of torque.

Along with an 80-kWh BYD Blade ithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a CLTC-rated range of 450 km, the U9 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.36 seconds and will hit a top speed of 300 km/h. Thanks to an 800V electrical architecture, the electric supercar supports DC fast charging at a maximum capacity of 500 kW, with a 30-80% state of charge achieved in just 10 minutes. There’s also slower AC charging at up to 7 kW that takes seven hours.

BYD’s first NEV was the F3DM, a plug-in hybrid sedan that went on sale in 2008. It would take the company 13 years before it produced its one millionth NEV, a BYD Han, in May 2021. Since then, over eight million NEVs have been produced by the company in a little over three years.
