The ninth-generation (XV80) Toyota Camry has been awarded with a five-star rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). This rating applies to all variants of the sedan, which is only available with a hybrid powertrain in Australia.

Under ANCAP’s latest 2023 criteria that applies through 2025, the Camry put up strong results in crash testing, most notably with a record score of 95% for adult occupant protection. Maximum points were awarded in the side impact, oblique pole, whiplash and far-side impact tests, providing occupants with a high level of protection.

“In the full width frontal test, the Camry performed well with full points for head and upper leg protection for both the driver and rear passenger. An ‘Adequate’ result was achieved for driver and rear passenger chest protection,” ANCAP said in its release.

Similarly, the Camry performed well when it came to child occupant protection with a score of 87%, with ‘Good’ levels recorded for head protection for both child dummies in the frontal offset and side impact tests. An ‘Adequate’ level of protection was recorded for the neck and chest of the 10-year-old dummy in the frontal offset test.

Moving on to the vulnerable road user protection criteria, the Camry managed to score 84% with good protection provided to pedestrians if struck. The sedan’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) was also effective in forward test scenarios, including turning and overtaking scenarios with most collisions were either avoided or mitigated.

“The AEB system reacts to vulnerable road users in reverse (AEB Backover) but the system is not default-on and hence these tests were not conducted and points were not scored,” ANCAP wrote in its report.

Lastly, the safety assist assessment saw the Camry achieve full points for its lane support system. The camera-based speed assist is also capable of some advanced features, including the ability to recognise curves while using the cruise control system and reduce the speed accordingly. A driver monitoring system is fitted but is not switched on by default, and was not tested or scored.

“The Toyota Camry offers robust protection for both occupants and vulnerable road users. This is a popular vehicle, widely used for both private and business purposes, which offers the five-star safety that drivers and passengers expect,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.
