Following its Southeast Asian debut in Indonesia back in July, you could tell that it was only a matter of time before the BYD M6 was announced for other regional markets. That happened soon enough, with Thailand becoming the next destination for the fully-electric MPV earlier this month. Now, it’s our turn, with the M6 also set to go on sale soon in Malaysia.
That the M6 – essentially a revised version of the e6 – is inbound and due to get its market debut likely in the coming month is all we know for now, as there is no indication as to the variants and specifications we’ll be getting.
It remains to be seen if we’ll get seven-seater and six-seater versions like in Indonesia, where the MPV is priced from 379 million rupiah (RM109,500) to 429 million rupiah (RM123,900), or whether only the six-seat configuration will be offered, as it is in Thailand, where it is priced from 829,900 baht (RM106,800) to 929,900 baht (RM119,600).
What is very likely is that there will be two variants forms, with different outputs. In both Indonesia and Thailand, the M6 is available in two states of power outputs.
On the base model (known as the Dynamic in Thailand), this is 163 PS (120 kW) and 310 Nm, which is a bump up from the 95 PS (70 kW) and 180 Nm seen on the e6. For the Extended (known as the Superior in Indonesia), the power is similar to that seen on the Atto 3 SUV, with 204 PS (150 kW) on tap. Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 and 8.6 seconds respectively.
Juice for the motor is provided by the automaker’s Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which on the base version is a 55.4 kWh unit capable of providing an NEDC-rated range of 420 km. Meanwhile, the higher output version gets the larger 71.8 kWh (as seen on the e6), and this is good for up to 530 km of NEDC-rated travel on a single charge.
In terms of charging, the M6 can accept up to 85 kW of DC fast charging, or up to 115 kW for the Extended, with the latter taking 40 minutes to get the battery from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge. As for AC charging, its limited to 7 kW regardless of variant.
Styling-wise, the M6 has been given a neat nip-and-tuck job, with changes led by a switch to the brand’s latest corporate face, with a full-width silver bar (incorporating the BYD script) linking the revised multi-projector LED headlights. These sit above a wing-shaped bumper insert that ties neatly into the slim air intakes and lower chrome flourish elements.
At the back, the M6 gets full-width tail lamps that integrate a slimmer, more subtle chrome strip and a BYD lettering badge, along with a chrome strip around the lower perimeter to dress up things further. The electric MPV rides on 17-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels in both Indonesia and Thailand, so we can expect to see the same here.
Inside, you’ll find minor changes from the e6, with the most visible being the switch to a wood-effect dash trim and a redesigned centre console. The latter ditches the rotary knob seen previously for a stubby gear selector. The centre touchscreen has also gone up in size from 10.1 to 12.8 inches and can now rotate to offer both horizontal and vertical orientation perspectives.
Standard equipment includes keyless entry, push-button start, an NFC key card, automatic air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, faux leather upholstery, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, a 360-degree camera system and a six-speaker audio system. The higher output variant adds on kit such as roof rails, a panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable ventilated front seats, Qi wireless charging and a powered tailgate.
Safety-wise, the M6 comes with six airbags, stability control and a door opening warning, along with driver assistance kit such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist. Emergency lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic with auto brake and door opening warning are exclusive to the higher output variant.
