2022 Yamaha MT-09 and Tracer 9 GT in surprise Malaysian reveal – pricing to be known in Nov 2021

In a surprise launch alongside the 2022 Yamaha TMax 560, Hong Leong Yamaha took the covers of the 2022 Yamaha MT-09 and the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, with pricing to be announced in November 2021. Both the MT-09 and the Tracer 9 GT carry the new Yamaha Crossplane 3 engine, now made Euro 5 compliant.

Displacement for the inline-triple in the 2022 MT-09 is now 889 cc, with Yamaha claiming a power output of 117.3 hp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. This is a slight increase in power over the previous generation MT-09 – priced at RM47,388 in Malaysia.

An up-and-down quickshifter is now standard equipment on the six-speed, assist and slipper clutch equipped gearbox. Overall weight has been reduced from 193 kg to 189 kg while a 3.5-inch, full-colour TFT-LCD screen displays all the necessary information including variable colour bar graph tachometer, gear indicator and other data.

Meanwhile, the Tracer 9 GT, which comes with the same power plant as the MT-09 makes 7% more torque which comes in 1,500 lower in the power band. The Tracer 9’s engine also weighs 1.7 kg less than the outgoing 847 cc Crossplane 3 and comes with new twin exhaust setup that saves 1.4 kg over the previous system.

Electronic suspension is standard on the Tracer 9 GT that comes with two suspension modes, an up-and-down quickshifter, LED cornering lights and adjustable seat and footrests. Also standard is four ride modes ranging from Mode 1 being the most aggressive, Mode 2 for all-round riding, Mode 3 for a softer power delivery and Mode 4 for wet weather work, complemented by cruise control.
